SeaWorld performs first ever spinal tap on rescued bottlenose dolphin
SAN ANTONIO —
SeaWorld San Antonio and animal care specialists performed the first ever spinal tap on a rescued bottlenose dolphin Thursday.
Rimmy, a sub adult female bottlenose dolphin, was rescued by the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network at 2-3 year old from being stranded on Sea Rim State Park. Rimmy was treated for 14 months at TMMSN's Galveston center for multiple ailments.
After determining Rimmy could not be released back into the wild due to her need for long-term medical treatment be continued, SeaWorld brought outside specialists Dr. Nicholas Jeffery, Dr. James Bailey and SeaWorld veterinarians Dr. Jennifer Camilleri, Dr. Steve Osborn and Dr. Hendrick Nollens to perform the procedure on Rimmy.
The ground breaking procedure was a success and Rimmy recovered completely.
