Work begins to demolish iconic Space Tower at State Fair Park
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
Work began Friday to demolish the iconic Space Tower at the Oklahoma State Fair Park.
The Oklahoma State Fair confirms that crews began taking apart the tower Nov. 9. Plans to take the tower down were confirmed in October.
Oklahoma State Fair spokesperson Scott Munz says that the decision was made after a review by a structural engineer.
The needle hasn't been in operation since 2010 and has been damaged in several different storms. It is estimated that it would take $1 million to stabilize the tower and $500,000 to fix the electrical room.
