OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KOKH) — Thursday is deadline day at the State Capitol, and conversations, or lack there of, caused a contentious situation in the House of Representatives.
It started with the introduction of the Oklahoma Heartbeat Act, one of the many abortion ban bills this session that kicked off the agenda.
House Democrats were hoping to ask questions and debate the bill, but the attempts were shut down by House Republicans with a procedural motion.
Democrats appeared very aggravated that they weren't able to voice their opinions, and the tensions started building.
Some representatives were vocal about the rushed process of passing controversial legislation, saying it's not democratic.
It all boiled over when House Democrats walked off the floor in frustration.
The situation simmered down until what was originally a sex education bill was brought to the floor.
SB615 had an amendment added Wednesday night requiring students to use bathrooms that coincide with their biological sex.
Democrats rushed back to the floor to vote against the bill and its new amendment.
House Republican Kevin West, (R)- Moore, said he heard there was going to be a mutual agreement not to debate the abortion bill, since there was a debate on a similar bill a few weeks ago.
The abortion ban bill heads to the Governor's desk, and the bathroom and sex education bill heads to the Senate.
