Mystery surrounds man found dead inside burned Mayes County home
MAYES COUNTY, Okla. (KTUL) —
Officials with the Mayes County Sheriff's Department are investigating a man found dead inside a burned home Tuesday night.
The mobile home, near Chouteau, had a history, but not much of one said Shawn Holt, who lives just down the road.
"A lot of people move in and out. It's a rent trailer, evidently. I don't have any idea who owns it," said Holt.
Holt said the home had seen better days.
"When I first moved down here, it was livable, but it really deteriorated really fast," said Holt.
Holt says he wasn't surprised by the fire, but the body that investigators said they found inside did surprise him.
"I didn't think anybody was in there at all. I hadn't seen any traffic in there at all. No cars pulling in there or nothing," said Holt.
It took Mayes County Sheriff's officials by surprise, too.
Right now, they have a lot of questions, starting with who the victim was and how he died.
"We really don't know that at this point. The body has been transported to the medical examiner's office to find out the cause of death," said Mayes County Under Sheriff Tim Thompson.
Until they get some answers, they said nothing has been ruled out.
