A Westmoore High School student attended the first day of classes after testing positive for coronavirus, Moore Public Schools confirmed Friday.

The district said a student who "knowingly had COVID-19" attended classes Thursday.

Once the district was informed of the student's health situation, officials contacted MPS nurses and the county health department.

Nurses for the district completed contact tracing to identify which students and staff may have come into contact with the student.

All staff and parents of students deemed to have come in close contact were notified, according to the district said.

One of the student's parents told the district they were "mistaken regarding the student's end of quarantine date."

The district also learned a second MPS student tested positive for COVID-19 at Moore High School.

The student attended classes Thursday and their parents made the school aware on Friday.

Students and staff who may have been exposed were notified.

The district said the school and classrooms will be deep cleaned and disinfected.

Oklahoma school districts are beginning to return to class for the fall semester. Some parents have opted for virtual learning if provided, while others are sending their students to in-person classes.

The Oklahoma City-County Health Department confirmed they are working with four schools across multiple districts after students and staff tested positive for COVID-19.

On Thursday, Newcastle Public Schools announced that an elementary student had tested positive for coronavirus.

Parents of the students who came in contact with the child were contacted. The district said it's working directly with the Oklahoma State Department of Health.

Health officials caution parents to remember the following COVID-19 prevention, mitigation and isolation requirements:

  • Don’t send your children to school if they are sick
  • If you’re waiting on a test result for your child, particularly if your child is sick or has been exposed to another positive case, you must isolate your child at home until the test result comes back negative.
  • If your child has been exposed to a positive case, within or outside of school, they still must quarantine for 14 days (even if they receive a negative test).
  • If the child’s test result comes back positive, do not send the child to school, even if the child has no symptoms. The child must be isolated at home (an adult must be present at home with a young child who is isolated) for at least 10 days (from the date they were tested). Even after the 10 days, the child must be fever-free for at least 24 hours and have improved symptoms.
  • If you have received a positive result from a lab, do not wait on a contact tracer to call you. You must isolate at home.
  • Parents may need to consider the feasibility of teleworking, taking leave from work, or identifying someone who can supervise your child in the event of school building closures or quarantine.

This is a developing story.
