TULSA, Okla. (KTUL) — The Tulsa Police Department has arrested a man who shot another man whom he believed to be a thief.
TPD says at 3 a.m. Monday morning, officers responded to a call at a home near 81st and Harvard in reference to a shooting.
When police arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The other man, David Roland, claimed he had shot the man because he believed he was a robber.
Roland told police that he was preparing to go to sleep when he heard a car drive down the road. Roland assumed it was a burglar because of the late hour, and watched as a man parked his silver car and got out.
Roland did not call 911 or the non-emergency number to contact police.
According to officers, Roland gathered a flashlight and a gun and went out the front door of his home, where he saw the man run from his driveway to the silver car carrying several items.
Police say Roland chased the man, stepped in front of the silver car and pointed his gun and flashlight at the man, telling him to show his hands.
The man got out of the car and said "you won't shoot me," and took a step towards Roland. Police say that's when Roland shot the man in the stomach from approximately three feet away.
Through their investigation, detectives discovered the man did steal items from Roland's neighbors, but nothing from Roland.
After being questioned, Roland was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Tulsa County Jail.
Police say the shooting victim is known to police, and will be arrested when he is released from the hospital.
