A lifetime sex offender in Shawnee has been arrested after being accused of having inappropriate conversations with an undercover deputy he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.

The Canadian County Sheriff's Office reports that 68-year-old Michael Gilbert of Shawnee was arrested Nov. 6 on a complaint of lewd acts with a child under 16.

An investigation into Gilbert began on Oct. 31 after the man reportedly began communicating with what he believed to be a 14-year-old girl on social media, but was in fact an undercover deputy.

During the conversation, Gilbert brought up various sex-related questions and reportedly admitted that he had been with a 14-year-old before. The man stated he "could not touch" the girl until she got older and asked the decoy to delete their conversation so he would not get in trouble.

Deputies were able to identify Gilbert and discovered he was a lifetime sex offender with a previous charge of lewd or indecent proposals to a child.

Gilbert was arrested at his place of employment in Shawnee on Nov. 6.
