MCALESTER, Okla. (KOKH) — The Oklahoma Department of Corrections reported on Saturday an investigation is under way into the death of an inmate at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary.
The death was discovered Friday night during a routine security check, according to an ODOC release. The victim was found unresponsive in his cell. Medical staff attempted to revive the inmate for over an hour, without success.
ODOC says the Office of Fugitive Apprehension and Investigations is conducting the investigation and the victim's "cellmate is believed responsible for the murder."
The name of the victim will not be released until the next of kin has been notified, and pending charges against the suspect, his name is also being withheld.
ODOC says both inmates were serving life sentences for first degree murder.
