How to keep air conditioners running in heat

James Bigmountain said this is one of his busiest days of the year. The technician for Air Comfort Solutions said when the weather gets warm, home air conditioners have more trouble.

"A lot of guys, after 5 or 6, we'll get us a little bit of a break in the middle of the day and we'll be out until sometimes 9, 10 o'clock at night trying to fix units," Bigmountain said.

He said the hot weather really makes air conditioners run hard.

"Just like running a car in the high heat," Bigmountain said. "They run just as hard trying to keep these houses cool. Any kind of lack of insulation, keeping your house sealed up, windows open."

Air Comfort Solutions had a busy day with triple-digit heat on Thursday. Bigmountain was on his fifth call of the day and the company had 40 calls between 4:30 and 6.

Some ways to prevent your air conditioner from going out is keep weeds and dirt out of the unit, give it a light rinse if you can and change your air filter every one to three months.

He said there are a lot of parts that can go bad and it's important to care for your air conditioner this time of year.

"Just like a car tune-up," Bigmountain said. "You want to make sure before you go on a long trip that it's ready for it. Same thing with these guys in the summer. That's when it's going to go to work."

Depending on what's wrong with your air conditioner, it could be a longer fix. Small electrical parts don't take long to fix while the bigger components could take hours.
