Expansion at Will Rogers World Airport could lead to more international flights
The Will Rogers World Airport is embarking on a new expansion that could lead to more international flights.
Thousands of people fly in and out of Will Rogers every day and with more and more people coming to Oklahoma City, traffic is going up. Will Rogers spokesperson Karen Carney says the airport only has one leasable gate for any new airlines.
"That kind of was driving the project," Carney said.
The big expansion will add another four gates to the terminal and then make plans for six more in the future.
To do that, the airport will have to get rid of a cargo building. The terminal expansion will come with new shops, a public skydeck and more efficient security checkpoints as well as international customs.
"Overall, the experience will be more streamlined and people will have a better experience when they come to the airport," Carney said.
The price tag for the project will be $86 million with all of that money coming from grants and ticket money.
They're hoping the added space will mean more flights across the country and around the globe.
"Not only are we going to be able to attract additional new air carriers and hopefully have our existing ones expand, but also bring international carriers to Oklahoma City," Carney said.
If all goes to plan, this project could be completed by the end of 2018.
