An Edmond North principal has won the $25,000 Milken Educator Award, in a surprise announcement Thursday morning.

Debreon Davis is one of 44 honorees across the United States, and is the only winner from Oklahoma.

According to the Oklahoma State Board of Education, Davis is known in the district for setting high expectations for her students and faculty.

State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister said Davis represents the best of Oklahoma educators.

“Effective principals create and reinforce the culture of a school to ensure teachers and students can excel in a supportive, trusting environment,” she said. “By any calculation, Debreon Davis is an exceptionally effective leader who is wholeheartedly dedicated to service. Her commitment to high expectations and belief that every child can achieve have earned respect from students and their families, her colleagues and the Edmond community.”

Gov. Mary Fallin attended the ceremony honoring Davis Thursday morning at an all-school assembly.

The Milken Educator Awards have been hailed by Teacher magazine as the “Oscars of Teaching”.
