The Midwest City Police Department says a man shot by an officer following a burglary has died.
Midwest City Police Department Chief Brandon Clabes says 18-year-old Charles Pettit died Friday at the OU Medical Center. Petit was shot by Midwest City Police Officer James Hill early Oct. 5 on campus at Rose State College.
Police say Pettit fled the scene of a first degree burglary at approximately 4 a.m. Oct. 5 on Peppertree Lane. Officer Hill chased Pettit and another suspect across the south parking lot of Rose State College. Police say Pettit stopped near an aquatics center on campus and hid behind a dumpster. Officer Hill reportedly told Pettit to show his hands and Pettit then allegedly pointed a loaded semi-automatic handgun at the officer.
Hill then shot Pettit several times. Pettit was transported to the OU Medical Center. Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater ruled the shooting justified by law.
"I am sympathetic for Pettit's extended family but there are consequences when you don't comply with lawful orders and try to kill a police officer," Clabes said.
