Oklahoma becomes a part of an international effort to help immigrants. The Feria Por Tu Salud is a health fair happening now in Oklahoma City. It starts today and goes through the weekend.

The event was started in California as part of an effort between the Mexican Consulate and the American government, but now it's a multi-national effort. In Oklahoma City, the Feria Por Tu Salud is happening at the Cantera Event Center in the Southeast part of the city. Bringing the event to Oklahoma is an effort by the Oklahoma City County Health Department, the Guatemalan Consulate in Oklahoma, and Mexican Consulate based out of Arkansas

In an interview conducted in Spanish, Jose Arturo Rodriguez, the Consulate General with the Guatemalan Consulate says these fairs are a movement of pro-health organizations, that push for education that started 18 years ago.

The national partnership started between the U.S. and Mexico, but Rodolfo Quilantan, the Consulate General with the Mexican Consulate out of Little Rock, says it has grown to impact many more people now.

“In this event participate all the Latin American countries in the United States, but also Spain, Portugal, and Philippines, “says Quilantan.

The event will also host several businesses that can answer questions about higher education, business support, immigration issues, but is primarily focused on health and screenings.

“This is a great opportunity for them to come and ask, information, and receive a little guidance on what to do and what not to do. We have education; we have health related services, obviously the health department is one of them,” says Carla Ponce, Oklahoma City County Health Department bilingual outreach.

During the weekend, hundreds are expected to come to the festival to get help with immigration documents, like renewing passports from a home country.

The Cantera Event Center, where the festival is being held, is located at 1 SE 59th St. Suite E. For a schedule you can click here.
