Community Focus: Christmas in the Neighborhood
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
A local group giving toys to children in the city's south side this weekend is also celebrating twenty-nine years of giving back in Oklahoma City.
Navidad en el Barrio, or Christmas in the Neighborhood, is meant to celebrate the strength of community while bringing joy to children, and it's a free event that is happening this Sunday.
Organizer and radio broadcaster Nancy Galvan say you can expect to see a similar celebration to that of year’s past with cultural dances, clowns, and music. This year, the headline performer is Edgar Vivar. He is a Mexican actor best known for his performances in family comedy shows.
Children will all get to pick toys, and some larger donated gifts will be raffled off. Families will also be able to enjoy entertainment throughout the night. Christmas in the neighborhood organizers say they collect gifts for the event for an entire year to make sure they have enough for the hundreds of children they expect each year.
For the last eight years, the Oklahoma City Police Department has also sent representatives to Christmas in the Neighborhood as a part of their community building effort. If you are interested in taking your family to this free event, it will be taking place at La Cantera event center located at 1 SE 59th St. Suite E in Oklahoma City.
