Inside the Storm: Tornado rips through Virginia
LYNCHBURG, Virg. (KOKH) —
After triggering severe storms in central and eastern Oklahoma Friday, more rounds of severe storms rocked the Deep South into the Middle Atlantic over the weekend.
Late Sunday afternoon, strengthening thunderstorms prompted tornado warnings in North Carolina as well as in southern and central Virginia. One particularly strong storm developed at tornado as it tracked through the city of Lynchburg, Virginia.
Wind damage was widespread through many parts of the city, including busy Timberlake Road into Bedford County where cars were flipped and many businesses were heavily damaged. The path of the tornado took went northward where it crossed the James River into Amherst County. Damage from the storm was extensive as it hit homes and toppled trees in the small town of Elon.
School was closed in the City of Lynchburg as well as Amherst County Monday. Thousands are still without power and Rt. 130, the main road through Elon, is closed to through traffic. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Blacksburg Virginia are going to survey the damage in this area Monday, and will issue a rating for this tornado.
