OU running back Joe Mixon arraigned on assault charges, suspended for season

The University of Oklahoma running back accused of assaulting a woman at a Norman cafe last month has been arraigned on charges and will be released on his own recognizance.Shortly after he was arraigned on charges, the University of Oklahoma announced he was suspended for the 2013 football season with this statement: "Today President David Boren accepted the recommendation of the Director of Athletics and the Head Football Coach to suspend Joe Mixon from the football team for the entire season. He will be excluded from all team activities, including being removed from the team roster. With appropriate conditions, he will be permitted to continue as a student, eligible for financial aid. Vice President for Athletics Joe Castiglione and Head Football Coach Bob Stoops said, 'As the university has demonstrated in the past, we are committed to winning the right way. As an example to others, OU sets the highest possible standards for its student athletes, coaches and staff.'" Joe Mixon was arraigned Monday afternoon at the Cleveland County courthouse. He arrived with his attorney, Kevin Finlay, around 1:20 p.m.During his arraignment, judge Steve Stice ordered the video of the apparent incident not to be released by the defense, prosecution, police, or university.Mixon was ordered to be booked into the Cleveland County Jail and will be released on his own recognizance. Judge Stice ordered him not to have any contact with his alleged victim. Mixon's attorney asked for the judge to order the victim not to contact Mixon but that was denied by the judge because "he had no jurisdiction over her."Finlay said Mixon is not a flight risk and began classes Monday at OU.Mixon must turn himself in by 4:00 p.m. Monday.On Friday, district attorney Greg Mashburn announced he would be charged with a misdemeanor count of act resulting in gross injury, a misdemeanor.More info: Norman Police release 911 call involving OU running back Joe MixonPolice said they were called to investigate an assault at Pickleman's Gourmet Cafe just after 2:30 a.m. on Friday, July 25. Norman police say Mixon was an "involved party" in the incident but stopped short of calling him a suspect. Police say Mixon and a 20-year-old female got into an altercation and it turned physical and ended with the woman having injuries to her face.When police arrived, Mixon was not at the scene. A police report filed by Norman officers said the woman was intoxicated and was bleeding from the mouth.On July 30, the University of Oklahoma announced he was not participating in team activities but did not call it a suspension.More info: Mixon's attorney releases statement in response to accusations
