I-35 open through Moore, but exits restricted
May 21, 2013 22:01 GMT

MOORE, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma transportation officials say Interstate 35 in Moore remains open, but exits into the community are blocked to all but emergency responders and work crews.

The highway is a major transportation link, running from Mexico to Minnesota, but officials discouraged travel through the area Tuesday so emergency crews would have clearer access.

Still, officials advise that traffic is congested in the area and say people should allow extra time if they must use the road.

Work crews from the state Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Turnpike Authority are devoting their efforts to the tornado cleanup. The agencies say 176 trucks and 54 pieces of heavy equipment are involved, along with the crews to operate them. Some crews used department equipment starting Monday before the storm moved through.
