NASA has released stunning images of an extended solar flare last week.

It happened Friday, along with the eruption of a magnetic storm.

It lasted nearly two hours - an unusually long time.

The images show particle coils spiraling along magnetic field lines in a dazzling arc.

The discharge - a massive explosion on the sun -- sending energy, light and high speed particles bursting into space.
