Police say a man attempted to escape and assaulted an officer while being arrested for stealing candy bars.

Patrick Walters, 29, was arrested Sept. 10 on complaints of assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and larceny of merchandise. The Oklahoma City Police Department reports that an officer observed Walters pass all points of sale at Walmart, 6100 W. Reno, without paying for two Snickers bars and a box of Mike and Ike candy. The price of the candy totaled to $2.54.

Walters allegedly took off running after the officer identified himself. The officer was able to catch up with Walters and a struggle ensued as he took him into custody. The officer stated he was struck in the face and charged by Walters as he attempted to get out of custody.

Walters was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Oklahoma County Jail.
