Police: Man assaults officer after being found with woman in car at metro park after hours

Vernon Carter, 26, was arrested March 19 on complaints of trespassing, obstructing an officer, assault and batter on a police officer and false personation. (Oklahoma County Jail)

Authorities say a man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a police officer and impersonating another person.

An arrest warrant filed in Oklahoma County court shows that at approximately 4:22 a.m. March 6 a Midwest City Police Department officer found a vehicle suspiciously parked after hours at Telstar Park, 9600 NE 19 Street. Inside the vehicle, the officer found a man and a woman naked.

The man identified himself as Steven Sanford. The man was later correctly identified as 26-year-old Vernon Carter. Carter then exited the vehicle. The officer asked Carter to put down his cell phone and he then allegedly began reaching inside the vehicle. The officer then began to believe that Carter may be getting a weapon out of the vehicle and attempted to pull him from the vehicle.

Two other officers then arrived on scene and began working to detain Carter. During the struggle Carter allegedly punched one of the officers in the head. At one point, a taser was deployed but deemed ineffective.

Once in custody, Carter was taken to a local hospital where he was treated under "Steven Sanford". On March 14, the actual Steven Sanford came to the Midwest City Police Department after receiving a summons for charges. Officer then were able to track down Sanford's actual name from a hospital employee.
