A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a female jogger and attempting to rape her.

Officers say they responded to an assault call near the 1600 block of S. Western Ave., Wednesday.

Arriving officers met with a woman who stated that while she was jogging she passed a man sitting under the bridge. The woman told police that the suspect, identified as Jose Garcia, had followed her, grabbed her and then threw her to the ground. She states that Garcia told her he wanted to rape her, while groping her and trying to pull her pants down.

The woman says she was punched three times in the face by Garcia as she attempted to fight him off, and yell for help. According to officers, the victim says Garcia got off of her after she bit his finger and told him that she had aids.

After the attack the woman told officers that Garcia stole her cell phone. She says she ran from the trails and was yelling for help when someone passing by stopped and allowed her to use their phone to call the police.

While waiting for the police the victim says she saw Garcia walking in a field. Other officers on the scene attempted to locate Garcia but were unable to find him at that time, officers report.

The victim was later taken to the hospital, while there police were able to locate Garcia and take him into custody.
