OKCFD making it easier to get free smoke alarms

The Oklahoma City Fire Department often stresses the necessity for smoke alarms in the home. And now they're making it even easier to get yours for free.

The fire department has revised the way it hands out free alarms to the public. They announced Tuesday on their Twitter page that Oklahoma City residents can now call 405-316-BEEP to get the detectors.

Residents can also go online to request a smoke alarm online at SmokeAlarmsOKC.com.

OKCFD officials say most residential fires occur at night while people are sleeping, and that in most cases, it's smoke that causes injury or death. According to statistics from OKCFD, if you have working smoke alarms in your home, you have at least a 50% greater chance of surviving a residential structure fire.
