Norman police: SWAT dispatched after man refused to come out of apartment

The Norman Police Department was dispatched on a welfare check about 8:30 a.m. Sunday in the area of E. Constitution Street and Dewey Avenue.

Officers arrived and discovered the subject had barricaded himself in an apartment, according to a NPD spokesperson. About 9:30 a.m. the SWAT team was called to negotiate with the subject.

Police believed the subject may have had mental problems and was potentially suicidal.

After a few hours the subject was persuaded to leave the apartment without incident. He was taken to Norman Regional Hospital for a mental health evaluation.
