Man arrested, accused of assaulting referee with clipboard at youth basketball game
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
Police say a call during a youth basketball game led to a fight between a coach and referee.
Oklahoma City Police Department reports show that at 8:45 p.m. Sept. 9 an officer was called to The Hive Gym, 14414 N. Lincoln Boulevard. On scene the officer learned that during a MAYB Youth basketball tournament a coach, 22-year-old George Edwards, became upset with a call.
Edwards reportedly walked on the floor and struck the referee, 38-year-old Travis Williams, over the head with a clipboard. A scuffle ensued after the incident and several people attempted to pull Edwards and Williams apart. During the scuffle, Williams allegedly hit Edwards' mother in the face with his fist.
Edwards was arrested and booked into the Oklahoma County Jail on complaints of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery upon referee.
Williams was issued a citation for assault and battery on the scene and released.
