Logan County Sheriff: Drunk mom leaves daughter on side of Oklahoma highway
A woman is in custody after she allegedly kicked her daughter out of her car in Oklahoma on a trip from Texas to Missouri.
The Logan County Sheriff's Office reports around 1:30 p.m. on May 1, a deputy was en route to training when he spotted a 15-year-old girl walking alone on I-35 near Seward Road.
The deputy spoke with the girl who said her mother kicked her out of their vehicle after an argument on a trip from Texas to Kansas City. The mother, identified as Renee Qualls, then reportedly drove off with a 12-year-old male in the vehicle.
The juvenile told the deputy she had been walking the highway for at least an hour and believed her mother was intoxicated and was still drinking alcohol before leaving her on the side of the road.
Deputies were able to make contact with Qualls, who reported she was still driving and possibly in Kansas. Investigators reported Qualls had slurred speech and was incoherent during their contact.
Qualls refused to stop for law enforcement or to report her location.
Deputies placed the juvenile into the custody of the state and issued a verbal order for the outstanding 12-year-old in Qualls' vehicle to be taken into the State's custody as well. Investigators then issued alerts across Oklahoma and Kansas for Qualls, as well as a warrant for her arrest on the charge of Child Neglect.
On May 15, Qualls was turned in to the Logan County Sheriff's Office by her legal representation, and the 12-year-old was placed in State's custody.
Qualls was arraigned in district court and is currently being held in the Logan County Detention Center with bond set at $50,000. Both juveniles have since been returned to the custody of their father.
