I-235 to be closed at I-44 for 5 days in June
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
A busy metro thoroughfare will be closed to traffic for five days next month.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reports that Interstate 235 will by closed to traffic at the I-44 interchange beginning at 8 p.m. June 2. The roadway will reopen at 8 p.m. June 7 depending on weather conditions.
Construction crews will work to reopen the eastbound I-44 off-ramp to southbound I-235, remove the remaining N. 50 Street bridge and complete temporary southbound and northbound traffic lanes. The work is all part of the largest single dollar amount project awarded in ODOT history. The multi-year project seeks to alleviate traffic problems by widening I-235 and reconstructing bridges.
Six weekend closures will also be conducted in the area as crews finish the project. Those closures have not yet been planned.
Motorists are asked to begin planning alternate routes now. ODOT suggests using I-35, SH-74 to I-44, I-40 or Lincoln Boulevard.
The five day closure was approved in lieu of a projected 20 days of single lane traffic.
