Freedom From Religion group asks for investigation into prayer before Norman football game
NORMAN, Okla. (KOKH) —
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is getting involved over a pre-game prayer at a Norman High School football game.
In a letter to a school representative, the group says a parent reached out to them showing them a video where the coach leads a prayer and addresses the "Lord" for wisdom before a Nov. 3 football game.
The group says it is illegal and unconstitutional for a school district employee to lead or participate in a student prayer. The letter reads:
"When a public school employee acting in an official capacity organizes and advocates for team prayer, he effectively endorses religion on the district's behalf."
The group is asking for an immediate investigation into the alleged action and for the school to stop any staff-led prayers occurring within district athletic programs.
