Cost to get a divorce in Oklahoma going up
It will soon cost you more money to get a divorce in Oklahoma. A new law signed by Governor Mary Fallin Monday would raise the filing fees for divorce, alimony, custody, and child support by $40.
The fees are expected to generate around $11 million per that would be used to fund district courts. Right now, the fee for filing a divorce in Oklahoma County is $194.66. Divorce attorney John Alberts says he believes the law is more for funding rather than trying to lower the divorce rate. "I think people who are financially struggling might be impacted by this," he says. "It may be a deterrent to those trying to handle a divorce on their own."
In the past five years, Oklahoma has had one of the highest divorce rates in the nation.
