Community Focus: Hispanic Arts Council Artists of the Year
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
The best Latino artists in Oklahoma announced by the Hispanic Arts Council of Oklahoma. Fox 25’s Community Focus first brought you three of the winning artists last week. Now here are the four remaining winners honored for their artistic contribution to Oklahoma.
Francisco Lopez was selected as musician of the year. He is one of the first to bring Mariachi to Oklahoma.
“Oh, I feel good now because I play with my kids. They are all good musicians,” says Frank Lopez, Most Outstanding Musician, of how popular Mariachi music is now, and how he gets to share his love of music with his children.
Renzo Mazzini was selected as photographer and cinematographer of the year, and says diversity helps everyone tell a better more complete story.
“I really think that every culture has a different input on the way they see things, the way they were raised. It is really cool to see all different kinds of people come together for arts,” says Mazzini.
Benevento Barrios was selected for his outstanding performance on the marimba, and exposing Oklahoma to traditional Guatemalan music.
“I just cannot believe it really. It never went through my mind that this was going to happen, and I really appreciate that this has happened,” says Barrios, most Outstanding Music Group artist.
Bernadette Martinez is a visual artists and was selected as the Most Outstanding Fine artist of the year, and for her the arts are lifesaving.
“Art saved my life, and I think that art needs to be in the school systems, and the children need the tools, so that it can save their lives,” says Martinez of the life changing power that the arts can have for teens and children.
The Hispanic Arts Council of Oklahoma - does have volunteers and board members of any community. Their mission is to promote, and showcase art and artists of Hispanic or Latino background.
