Community Focus: Boxing coach opens new facility for youth in Spencer

A boxing coach is at it again for another round of community service.

We introduced you to Coach Lavell Sims last year and now he has a new venture that will help kids after school. An old church, daycare, and school are making this all possible

"Hopefully this can flourish and bring Spencer back to where it use to be," Sims said.

Sims and his team are putting down the boxing gloves, and working to convert the building into a multiplex for children. It's called the Life Changes and Wellness Special Event Center.

"We put a lot of midnight oil in this facility,” Sims said.

If you walk in you might not expect to see a boxing ring inside, basketball court and classrooms but it's the only resource of its kind for kids living in the area.

"They reached out to me years ago, they said Coach Sims we need something for these kids to do for the summer, spring break and just in general, they don't have it,” Sims said.

Coach Sims says even though they are using the facility, a lot of work still needs to be done so they need volunteers: tile needs to be laid down for a dance studio and bathrooms need to be fixed.

"We're not turning anybody away. We want this thing up and running. We want this thing to be more than just a one-hit wonder. We want to keep this thing going way after my wife and I," Sims said.

The vision is there, but a little TLC will make it a fully-functional center for children in need. The Metropolitan Library System is stepping in to make this happen for the first time in Spencer. Coach Sims says before kids had to check out books in Midwest City.

Every kid received a free meal before they return home and K.O.

"If you leave out of here with structure discipline, self-esteem, we want you to be able to say you got something out of life changes and wellness," Sims said.
