Beckham County Sheriff: 7-8 suspects on the run after Texas pursuit
ELK CITY, Okla. (KOKH) —
The Beckham County Sheriff's Office is hunting down several suspects following a police pursuit that started in Texas.
The sheriff's office says the chase begin for a traffic violation in Texas and ended just southwest of Elk City on I-40, and seven to eight suspects fled the scene on foot. As of 11 a.m. Sept. 7 all of them were still at large.
Authorities are urging residents living south of I-40 between Merritt Road and Washington to be on alert. They say to keep all doors locked on homes, vehicles and outbuildings and do not approach any suspicious people in the area.
Police do not have a description of the suspects at this time. Authorities say no weapons were found in the suspect's vehicle and none were seen on the suspects as they fled, but that doesn't mean they should not be considered dangerous. A small amount of drugs and paraphernalia were also found in the vehicle.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a helicopter assisting in the search. Also on-scene is the Beckham County Sheriff's Office, Elk City Police Department and OHP.
Elk City Public Schools says it has been in contact with the sheriff's office and will continue school as scheduled today. They say they're being very vigilant with their safety procedures.
Anyone with information should report it to the Beckham County Sheriff's Office.
