Thousands of students are heading back to class Thursday and that includes those in Putnam City.

FOX 25's Malcolm Tubbs checked out the first day activities at Putnam City West Aug. 18. He kicked off the day learning about the Link Crew, which is a program where seniors advise incoming freshman as they come into a new school.

Putnam City West seniors also travel to nearby Lake Overholser for the first day of the year for the Senior Sunrise. Seniors use the moment to bond together as they begin their last year of school together.

Putnam City West is also home to last year's state championship basketball team. Malcolm stopped by the gym to get a lesson in dunking from members of the team.

FOX 25 then paid a visit to Putnam City West quarterback Trey Gooch on learned the expectations the team faces this year. The team kicks off the season Sep. 1 against Duncan.

The Putnam City West Band then showed off their skills. The band is the largest student organization on campus and play at all big sporting events.

Principal Buster Meeks said he was excited to get students in the classrooms.

"Their expectation is to just have a good year," Meeks said.

Meeks also praised the school's Link program.
