Norman police will start a new School Resource Officer program Thursday as school begins in that city.

Two officers are assigned to Norman High School and another two to Norman North, police said. Another three officers are assigned to the middle schools.

“The School Resource Officer program will allow law enforcement and students to work under one accord in creating a safe and proactive environment so that students can best prepare for their future,” said Norman Police Chief Keith Humphrey in a news release.

The high school officers will also be able to respond to elementary schools if needed, police said.

The program is a new partnership between the school district and police.

Officers will also be at every school site for the first day of school, issuing tickets as high of $750 for a ticket for improperly passing a school bus.
