Tell Me Something Good: Center of Family Love

For the past 30 years, adults from 18 to 84 have called the Center of Family Love home. It's a safe haven for the developmentally challenged.

"Oftentimes they'll be at home and their families worry 'what will happen if something happens to me? Who's going to care for my loved one?' That's the dream that started this place," said Lisa McConnell, the Human Resources Director.

Since the beginning, the Knights of Columbus have played a big part in helping establish the Center as a premiere facility.

"It is supported heavily throughout the state of Oklahoma by different councils of Knights of Columbus," said Mark Cearley, State President of Knights on Bikes.

The Center offers several living styles from intermediate care to geriatric care. There are also group homes for those more advanced.

"More like a dorm type setting where they share a living space and learn independence," said McConnell.

The Center builds self-esteem and fulfills a sense of acceptance by getting the residents out in the community.

"We take them out to the fair, we take them to Thunder games, we take them out to do all sorts of activities," said McConnell.

Workshops where residents build 3-ring binders and filters provide a little spending money.

"They have an opportunity to earn a paycheck and be productive members of society," McConnell said.

But running one of the few facilities like this in the state isn't cheap. That's why the Center is returning to its roots, the Knights of Columbus, to help with a fundraiser.

"That's what Knights do," said Cearley. "We help our community, we help those in need."

Saturday's "Love Run" is a chance to explore Oklahoma on two wheels or four wheels. Everyone is welcome along for the ride whether you're a Knight or not.

"You pick up a map at Eischen's in Okarche, then you start out on a hundred mile ride," explained McConnell.

With stops planned in El Reno, Oklahoma City, and Piedmont the poker run will wrap up at the Center of Family Love with an outdoor concert and cookout.
