Community Focus: DACA Scholarship
OKLAHOMA CITY (KOKH) —
An incredible opportunity for undocumented people thanks to the Oklahoma City Police Department FACTS program-- that stands for family awareness and community teamwork.
it's an effort to build up young leaders in the community.
The money raised by the OCPD will be used as 15 one thousand dollar scholarships to Latino high school seniors that, meet DACA criteria, are undocumented, or have parents that have been deported.
The Latino Agency is helping the Oklahoma City Police Department select scholarship winners.
“I think that it is absolutely amazing knowing that they want to invest in the community and that they see the DACA recipients as worthy recipients of something like this, and knowing that maybe they don't have an opportunity to apply elsewhere, “says Patty Demoraes-Huffine with the Latino Agency.
The Latino Community Development Agency also wants to calm anyone's concerns that the application process might affect their status negatively.
“If you are a DACA recipient, you know, you qualify for this, so absolutely, you should not be afraid to apply for it, “says Demoraes-Huffine
The OCPD FACTS Program is primarily a gang prevention program that focuses on children, and it is sponsored by the Leadership Foundation of Oklahoma.
The deadline for this scholarship is March 30th 2018. Students also need to be graduating seniors who have a 3.0 GPA or higher, and are in need of financial assistance. For more information on scholarship requirements click here.
