VIRAL: Mother breastfeeding baby at graduation ignites debate
By Jay Dillon
A picture of a mother breastfeeding her newborn during her graduation ceremony has sparked a firestorm of online debate. Karlesha Thurman, 25, got pregnant during her final year of college at Long Beach State University, but she stayed in school and completed her degree in Accounting. Thurman brought her three-month-old daughter Aaliyah to her graduation ceremony last month. While she was showing off her daughter to her fellow graduates, Aaliyah got hungry. So, dressed in full cap and gown, Thurman fed her daughter. One of Thurman's friends thought what she was doing was cool and asked if she could take a picture of the mother feeding her daughter. A few days ago Thurman posted the photo to the Facebook group "Black Women Do Breastfeed" to support a fellow mother who had been criticized for nursing in public. Karlesha deleted the photo after receiving criticism, but the Facebook page decided to share it as part of their campaign to #NormalizeBreastfeeding. Again, the photo received much criticism with some commenting about the inappropriateness of the photo, while others praised her for doing her maternal duty in feeding her child.
