Verizon's encouraging ad has nothing to do with phones
By Jay Dillon
Verizon is in the phone and data business and business is good. Being one of the largest phone companies in the country won't hold them back from supporting growing girls. The phone company's new ad, titled 'Inspire Her Mind', premiered on YouTube earlier this month and has picked up more than a million views. The minute long ad shows a growing girl in different situations: She's playing with flowers and rocks, walking through a creek, picking up bugs, and using power tools, among other things. In every scene, she's being called away from her mom and dad off camera. She's being told 'not to touch that' or 'give the tool to your brother'.The video ends with her approaching a poster that's advertising a science fair. It's behind glass but instead of reading the poster, she does something else entirely. It ends with some knowledge: 66% of 4th grade girls say they like science and math. But only 18% of all college engineering majors are female.Verizon did not say where that data came from.
