Rory McIlroy's British Open pays off big for his father and friends
A big win over the weekend for golfer Rory McIlroy winning the British Open, his third major event. It was a big win for his father too.
A spokesperson for British betting firm Ladbrokes confirmed that it had held three bets that will award Rory McIlroy's father and his friends to make more than $300,000 off his son's victory.
McIlroy's rather made a $341 bet back in 2004 that Rory would win the open within 10 years. That bet will pay out $171,000. Two other bets, believed to be made by friends of Rory's father were made in 2005. Both for $341, one for Rory to win the open by 2015 and another for Rory to win before the age of 50.
Ladbrokes says these kinds of special odds requests are fairly common with more than 300 made a year.
At least one usually comes through every couple of years.
