New Mexico State's K.C. Ross-Miller hurled the ball at Utah Valley State's Holton Hunsaker seconds after the Wolverines' 66-61 overtime victory over the Aggies, triggering a wild brawl that involved fans who came on the court.
New Mexico State's D.K. Eldridge was in the middle of the scrum before he was dragged away by Aggies coaches as order was restored.
The brawl marred Utah Valley State's victory in the showdown of Western Athletic Conference co-leaders.
Ben Aird scored 21 points, and Keawe Enos hit clutch free throws for Utah Valley State.
Enos hit three free throws with 4 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and hit four more in the last 11 seconds of overtime. He finished with 11 points for the Wolverines (17-10, 11-3), and Zach Nelson added 10.
Daniel Mullings led the Aggies (21-9, 10-4) with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Marvin Menzies head men's basketball coach at NMSU released the following statement:
"After reviewing the tape of the game and the events that immediately followed, a decision has been made to immediately suspend KC Ross-Miller. No matter what provoked KC what he did was inexcusable and hence the suspension. It is an honor and a privilege to wear an Aggie uniform and a responsibility comes with that privilege. I will wait until I've had a chance to talk with our conference officials and university administration before any other disciplinary actions may or may not be taken. My initial assessment is that we're looking at two separate components, one being KC throwing the ball at Hunsaker and the other being the altercation between the players and the fans who rushed the floor. I would like to commend my staff for their immediate reaction to engage our players and remove them from the floor. We are currently reviewing several sources of video to accurately assess the situation. Obviously this was a very unfortunate incident and I'm hopeful that we can learn from it moving forward."
