Oklahoma City animal shelter requests toys, blankets for 700 pets

The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter is looking for donations for 700 animals currently in their care. This dog is not one of them; his name is Opie and he has a forever home with a FOX 25 producer.

This holiday season, the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter has about 700 pets who won't be curling up under any trees at their forever homes, but you can still help them.

The City is requesting dog and cat toys and blankets and towels for bedding for their animals this holiday season. It's part of the shelter's enrichment program, which is designed to improve the lives of the animals during their stay.

The toys reduce stress on the dogs, keeping them healthier and more adoptable, according to shelter supervisor Jon Gary.

To date, more than 6,400 animals have been adopted out in 2013. If you're thinking a new pet is the right addition to your family this holiday season, all dogs are $30, kittens are $60, and cats six months and older are free from December 14-23.

The toys can be dropped off at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter, SE 29 and Bryant. Shelter hours are noon to 5:45 p.m. daily. Call 297-3100 for details. Adoptable pets can be viewed here.
