OKC police: temp workers fight over trash, one stabbed

Police and first responders answered the call which landed Kevin Newton and Percy Johnson in the hospital.

"These two individuals were arguing about cleaning when a fight broke out," said Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow with Oklahoma City Police.

Officers say it happened at Cherokee Building Materials on NE 31st Street where the men both had temporary jobs. They say it got physical quickly just before 10 a.m.

"One of the involved appeared to have part of his thumb missing," Wardlow said.

She's talking about Newton. Police say Johnson may have a punctured lung.

An ambulance brought Johnson to OU Medical Center in serious condition with traumatic injuries. Police also say Kevin Newton brought himself to the hospital to get checked out later.

Both men gave officers different accounts of what happened.. So for now, they are not making arrests.

"Because basically it appeared to be a mutual combat, he said-he said type situation," Wardlow explained.

Police say Johnson told officers that he asked Newton to grab a shovel and help clean near the trash. He said Newton responded "no I know how to clean up the yard" so Johnson says he replied "fine I will do it myself."

That's when Johnson told police he turned his back and Newton jumped on him from behind. However Newton's story blames Johnson for starting it all. His detailed account was not included in the police report.

We tried to speak with both men but neither answered their door.

Between them there's only one fact undisputed: police say they used any nearby objects they could find to attack each other.

"I believe there was a broom, possibly a shovel so who knows what else was involved," Wardlow said.

Johnson also said Newton carried a 5 to 8-inch knife.

They were placed at Cherokee Building Materials by a temp agency, according to police. The agency would not speak with FOX 25 for this story. But CBM employees say the two worked off and on for the company for a few months. They say they will not be asked back in the future.
