Medical examiner: Chickasha couple deaths ruled murder-suicide

The medical examiner says it has confirmed what law enforcement officials originally thought while responding to a double shooting in Chickasha earlier this week.

Around 2:45 PM Tuesday, Chickasha and the Grady County Sheriff's Office were called to a home near S. 25th and Country Club Road after a woman was found dead. As officers arrived on scene, they found a man still breathing. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition and died almost two hours later.

They were identified Wednesday as 57-year-old Phyllis Atkinson and 61-year-old Patrick Atkinson.

on Thursday, the Oklahoma State Medical Examiner said Phyllis' death was a homicide and she died from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. Patrick died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the medical examiner.

In a press release Wednesday, the Chickasha Police Department said they're still investigating what lead to the scene, but believe the two may have been separated for a time and Phyllis stopped by the home when the incident occurred.
