The Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives took a three-city tour to announce his intention to run for the U.S. Senate.
He announced his decision Wednesday in Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Lawton, Shannon's hometown.
Republicans nation-wide regard Shannon as a rising star. He says he will stand for conservative ideals to cut the deficit and wasteful spending in Washington.
Shannon was the first African American elected as Speaker in the Oklahoma House in 2012. His wife Devon stood next to him during his announcement.
U.S. Rep. James Lankford announced last week he will also seek Dr. Coburn's vacated Senate seat.
Coburn went public with his resignation January 16, but hinted months earlier he may not finish his term in the U.S. Senate.
