Flu numbers continue to rise, 51 Oklahomans now dead

The latest flu numbers are out and as spring approaches, the number of Oklahomans who have died from flu-related illnesses continue to climb.

The Department of Health says 51 Oklahomans have died from flu-related illnesses with 1,202 hospitalized since flu season started in September. That number is up three from last week when there were 48 reported deaths.

This flu season has had the most deaths on record, beating the 2009 mark set at 46.

All of the deaths in the past week are in the 65+ age group. The total in that age group who have died is 18. The 50-64 age group continues to have the most deaths with 19.

The county with the most reported flu deaths is Tulsa where nine people have died, up one from last week. Oklahoma County's death toll continues to rise as well, climbing from three to four.
