First cases of flu confirmed for 2014 season

The first cases of influenza this season have been confirmed in Oklahoma County.The Oklahoma State Department of Health says two children under the age of 5 tested positive for the flu, with one of the cases in Oklahoma County and the other in Tulsa County. Oklahoma State Department of Health Epidemiologist Laurence Burnsed says the Oklahoma flu season typically starts in October and runs through April. "What's important to know is that influenza can cause illness in persons of all ages, but there is some people that can be affected more severely than others," Burnsed said. The Department of Health recommends that everyone older than six months get the flu shot. Looking for other ways of prevention? The department also recommends good hand washing and sanitizing as well as covering your coughs with a tissue or coughing into your sleeve.
