FBI arrests Norman cross-dressing bank robber

The suspect robbed the Republic Bank & Trust Monday evening.

The man federal officials say dressed as a woman and robbed two banks has been arrested and booked into the Grady County Jail.

44-year-old John Paul Matthews was arrested in Norman around 2:15 Tuesday morning. The Oklahoma City Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation says he was arrested in the 1700 block of Class in Norman by FBI Agents and Norman Police officers.

The FBI claims Matthews robbed the Republic Bank & Trust just before 7:00 PM Monday. They say he walked into the bank in the 1200 block of E. Lindsey Street wearing women's clothing. According to the FBI report, he approached the teller with a note that indicated he had a gun and demanded money. He then left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

A witness says he climbed into a white Cadillac and said he recognized him from a previous robbery at the Arvest Bank on W. Lindsey. That bank was robbed Friday, September 27th. The witness told police he recognized the man from the previous robbery because of media reports.

The witness was able to get the license plate number off the Cadillac and gave it to investigators. That led them to Matthews on Classen, where he was arrested and booked into the Grady County Jail. He is expected to make his initial appearance in federal court later Tuesday.
