It's day seven of the government shutdown and there's still no sign Congress can pass a budget bill anytime soon. But this morning...the wait is over for some Oklahomans on furlough.
Many workers are being called back to work today, even though the government is still shut down.
This morning, several civilian workers at Tinker Air Force Base, are returning to work.
According to their Facebook page, effective today- all Air Force material command employees at Tinker Air Force Base will return to duty.
Also furloughed employees at Fort Sill will return to work this morning. Fort Sill's public affairs office says this announcement is for all Department of Army civilian employees, but does not include contractors.
This move comes after Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced over the weekend that the Department of Defense can eliminate furloughs. He says under the law the DOD can eliminate furloughs for employees whose responsibilities contribute to the morale, well-being and readiness of service members.
Also over the weekend, the House passed a bill providing back pay to federal workers who were furloughed. No word on when the Senate might vote on that bill.
The local chapter of the American Federation of Government Employees will be holding another rally this afternoon.
