Cheesepocalypse: Velveeta shortage looms as Super Bowl approaches
This could be a problem ahead of the Super Bowl on FOX: Kraft Foods is running low on Velveeta.
It's almost a requirement for football, especially the playoffs: a bowl of melted cheese blended with salsa. But this February, you may be out of luck because of a possible Velveeta shortage.
AdAge broke the news after receiving reports of a shortage at some East Coast grocery stores. In Brooklyn, a grocer says they're not expecting shipments until February because of a plant issue. Super Bowl XLVII will be played in New York on Feb. 2.
"Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft's spokesperson Jody Moore told Ad Age. "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue. It's a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand."
